Sometimes, one cue changes everything.
During one of our recent sessions, Blaž Kopic dropped a gem that instantly shifted how we approach the half deadlift:
“Hug the weight.”
It’s simple, but powerful. In the setup for a half deadlift, the natural instinct is often to pull. But Blaž reminded us: don’t pull—connect.
“Hugging the weight” means bringing the barbell into your body—literally and mentally. It activates the posterior chain, reinforces trunk stability, and creates a strong, grounded connection with the load. It’s not just about grip—it’s about ownership.
This one cue changes the feel of the movement. More awareness, more control, less compensation.
It’s another reminder that small adjustments often unlock big progress.
Thanks Blaž, for sharing another key with us.
